Recycling Unwanted Mobile Phones

In the UK there is an estimated 90 million unused mobile phones, with more than half of the general public upgrading their phone contracts and their phone every few years.

Only half the population of the UK are aware of being able to recycle their unused mobiles. About 50% of the population know how much they could sell their phones for. Astonishingly, in the last 12 months only 1 in 10 people have recycled their unwanted mobile.

Across Europe there is an estimated 160 million unused mobiles. If all of the materials that can be found in mobiles, i.e. gold, lead, etc. were recycled from all of the unused mobile phones in Europe, they would sell for £315 million.

At Office Green we provide a mobile phone recycling service. Like every other one of our recycling services we have the simplest and most recycling focused scheme.

Recycling Fuser Units

A fuser unit is a part of the printer which does the printing. The fuser unit is made up of two rollers, which is where the paper goes through. One roller is made from thick rubber, and the other is made from thin metal in order to heat up quickly.

When the thin metal roller has toner on it, it heats up, pressing against the paper and the thick rubber roller, this transfers the toner onto the paper.

After a lot of wear and tear, the fuser unit wears out and needs to be replaced. The best way to dispose of your fuser unit is to recycle it.

At Office Green we collect and sell a variety of fuser units, mainly Hewlett Packard and Lexmark, that are suitable for refurbishment in the 220v and 110v markets.

Various fuser units in modern printer’s are customer replaceable items.

These fuser units can simply be returned on their own if you have a minimum of ten units featured on our points list. You can even combine a fuser unit with any cartridges or mobiles that you have ready to return.

Reasons for Recycling Printer Cartridges

Every year in the UK we throw away over 30 million ink cartridges. To produce that amount of ink cartridges it takes 1,425,000 litres of oil. When you consider that ink cartridges take 1,000 years to decompose, it is clear how this will impact the environment. A way to decrease the environmental effects of ink cartridges is to use remanufactured ink and toner cartridges. There are various reasons why ink and toner cartridges should be recycled:

  • They contribute to the quickly expanding landfills.
  • Recycling cartridges leads to savings for both production and management costs.
  • To produce one cartridge is takes 100 ml of oil and 1,400 ml of raw materials.
  • Every year 300 million cartridges are thrown away.
  • Buying remanufactured ink cartridges can save you money, up to 70%.
  • Remanufactured cartridges 80% less resources than a new cartridge.
  • Every year ink cartridges amount 75,000 tonnes of waste.
  • By manufacturing a single mono toner cartridge it emits approximately 4.8 kg of CO2.
  • Ink cartridges with a microchip may cause inkjet printers to refuse to print with a cartridge that declares itself empty, to prevent consumers from refilling cartridges.

At Office Green we believe that recycling should be simple, in order to encourage vast environmental support. For more information about our recycling scheme and collection service please contact us at http://www.officegreen.co.uk/

Recycling Ink Cartridges within Businesses

Everyday in the business sector ink cartridges are constantly being used, whether it is for CV’s or hard copy notes for a work presentation. They are a constant part of the business sector. Even though iPads are being used more frequently within businesses, printed material still plays a key role. Commonly, we print documents to be filed away or for client literature.

Within a busy company ink cartridges get used all the time and will often run out quickly. Many will discard them, but, with increased awareness of green living they are being recycled instead. However, some people may not know how to recycle ink cartridges or what are the best options?

This is where we at Office Green come in, as we provide a collection scheme for ink and toner cartridges. Our schemes are nothing but environmentally focused and we hope you become part of them today!

Recycling is crucial for ink cartridges as they have a predicted 1,000 year decomposition rate. This highlights the issue of discarding them, especially as they can be remanufactured! Depending on the cartridge they can be reused between 3 to 7 times, that is a lot of cartridges being saved from landfill.

Here at Office Green we strive to provide the best recycling scheme for ink and toner cartridges. With our ‘Zero to Landfill’ policy we strongly believe that we should pave the way to a greener, brighter future. The Importance of Recycling Ink Cartridges

Ink cartridges are used every day whether at home or in the office. However, people do not realise the environmental impact ink cartridges have when they aren’t recycled. It is expected that the plastic used to make ink cartridges takes 1,000 years to decompose. Every year 1.1 billion ink cartridges are used worldwide: Laid end to end all of the cartridges would be 129 times as long as the Great Wall of China.

Did you know that to make a laser ink cartridge it takes 3.5 litres of oil, and to produce an inkjet cartridge it takes 90 ml of oil? That is a lot of oil being used especially when you consider that laser ink cartridges and inkjet cartridges can both be recycled. With every laser ink cartridge put into landfill it adds up to 3 pounds of waste. In the UK over 30 million inkjet cartridges are dumped into landfill. Which is 1800 tonnes equivalent to the weight of 18 blue wales.

Research has shown that a used cartridge can be reused or remanufactured between 3 to 7 times. With each cartridge that is remanufactured, one less goes directly to landfill. Only 20 - 30% of cartridges sold worldwide are remanufactured. In the UK, over 65 million cartridges are bought each year, in which only an estimated 15% are recycled or remanufactured. A recycled ink cartridge can cost up to 65% less than original brand cartridges.

I hope this post has given you food for thought about the reasonings for recycling ink cartridges. For further information on how to get involved in recycling ink cartridges please feel free to visit our site http://www.officegreen.co.uk/
