Things you can re-use at home

There are so many things at home that you can reuse and make into new things. Here are a list of great things you can do to reuse and recycle:

1) Have any old CD’s that you don’t use anymore? You can make coasters out of them by gluing two together and putting felt underneath to make it non-slip.

2) A great way of using up a lipstick is by melting it with a small pot of lip balm, leaving you with a lip gloss.

3) You can save your corks, and when painting you can use them as stamps.

4) Cut off the bottom of an empty milk carton and plant a tree seedling inside it, The carton will protect your seedling from the weather and pests, and will also degrade as the tree grows.

5) Thinking of throwing your old jeans out? You can use them to cover patches in other jeans!

6) Take-away containers are a great method of storing bits and bobs as well as various foods.

7) Want to keep your picnic cooler cool? Fill an old milk carton up and freeze them.

8) Save old small toiletry containers so you can reuse them by refilling them from normal size bottle to create travel size containers.

9) You can make your own wrapping paper by using old newspapers, magazines, and comics.

10) Make your birthday and Christmas cards from old cards, photos, and stamps etc..

Recycling and reducing your waste

There are many ways you can recycle more and reduce the amount of waste that you produce, here are some tips to get you started:

Going digital - Instead of reading newspapers and magazines, try reading them online instead. Nowadays, the majority of newspapers and magazines have online versions.

Buy products that have little or no packaging - Buying in bulk is a good example of this. Look for products available to buy in bulk that you can purchase by using your own containers.

Buy high quality products - Products of high quality last longer and subsequently reduces your waste.

Buying second hand - Before you buy something brand new, consider second hand. You can find quality products at your local charity shop, it also helps to reduce waste as there isn’t any packaging.

Using towels and fabric napkins - Instead of wasting paper towels mopping up spills, try using towels as you can wash and reuse them.

Take your own bags when shopping - Taking your own bags when going food shopping will prevent the waste of plastic bags. Many supermarkets sell reusable fabric bags.

Great Tips for Cutting Waste

There are a variety of things you can do to cut down on waste both at home and at work. Here are some great tips to help you decrease the amount of waste you produce at home and at work:

At Home

1) Refrain from using disposable batteries. Use rechargeables, now widely available on the high street or online.

2) When cleaning the kitchen use cotton cloth instead of disposable kitchen towel.

3) Buy a sandwich wrap for your packed lunch and save those uneconomical plastic bags.

4) You can save about 40 litres of water by having a shower instead of a bath (avoid power showers as they can use more water than a bath). You can also install spray taps for new sinks as they use less water than normal taps.

5) Recycle old unwanted clothes by giving them to your local charity shop.

At Work

1) You can look for licensed waste sites where you can recycle or dispose of your business waste.

2) Instead of using disposable paper towels you can install a roller towel.

3) Only print documents when absolutely necessary, if you do print a document use both sides of the paper.

4) Don’t throw away old computers, you can sell them, donate them or recycle them.

5) Turn off appliances such as computers and TV’s when not in use and refrain from leaving them on standby.

March’s Featured Charity

Our featured charity for this month is Red Nose Day.

25 years have past since Red Nose day first burst onto our television screens and this year, once again, the nation is gearing up to put on their noses, pull out all the stops and get fundraising.

Whether its at work, at school, or at home the money is used to transform the lives of countless people.

How Comic Relief spends your money:

1) In the UK - your donations help give shelter to young people living on the streets and protection to those living with domestic abuse.

2) In Africa - your donations saves thousands from malaria and provides whole communities with fresh water and life-saving vaccines.

Carbon Footprint

A carbon footprint is the total sets of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by a company, event, product, or person.

Yet, actually calculating the the total carbon footprint is not possible due to the large amount of data required and the point that carbon dioxide can be produced by natural occurrences.

The contributors of greenhouse gase emissions are transport, land clearance, and the production and consumption of food, fuels, manufactured goods, materials, wood, roads, buildings, and services.

Want to find out more about carbon footprints and how to start recycling?
