Waste and Recycling: Facts & Figures



  • In 2010 - 2011, over 40% of household waste was recycled in England compared with 11% in 2000-2001.

  • In England the average residual waste per person has decreased from 351 kg/person/year in 2006 - 2007 to 263 kg/person/year in 2010 - 2011.

  • In 2009 in England, 52% of commercial and industrial waste was recycled or reused, in comparison with 42% in 2002 - 2003.

  • In the UK in 2010 - 2011, 50% of the local authority collected waste was sent to landfill, in comparison with the EU-27 average of 40%.

  • In 2009 the UK produced approximately 8.3 million tonnes of food and drink waste per year, 7.0 million tonnes of which was food - by 2020 in England this could generate at least 3-5 TWh electricity per year (a heat equivalent of 6-10 TWh).
